Perhaps the greatest indicator of character is the capacity to recognize and appropriately respond to other people who are experiencing the very challenge or adversity that is most immediately and forcefully pressing upon us. Character is revealed, for example, in the power to discern the suffering of other people when we ourselves are suffering; in the ability to detect the hunger of others when we are hungry; and in the power to reach out and extend compassion for the spiritual agony of others when we are in the midst of our own spiritual distress.
Thus, character is demonstrated by looking and reaching outward when the natural and instinctive response is to be self-absorbed and turn inward. The natural man is exemplified by the Cookie Monster and his voracious appetite, “Me hungry, Me want cookie, Me want cookie now!” The natural man turns inward while the spiritual man turns outward to others.
Alma 23:6 ………….as many of the Lamanites as believed in their preaching, and were converted unto the Lord, never did fall away.
Many with testimonies will fall away, only those who are converted will remain true and faithful when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.
My alarm woke me at 2:45 a.m. this morning. I set it so I would not forget to get food and take it to the Adriatic North Mission reunion at Lon and Pat Nield's. I went back to bed and got up before 8 a.m. I had prayer, showered, shaved, and got ready for church at Abbington Memory Center. Brother McCall and his family came with two other priesthood brothers from the Lehi 21st Ward to conduct the sacrament meeting. After the service, I drove back home and got a banana and toast with peanut butter. I also drank some of my spinach, apple, and carrot smoothie. I attended sacrament and priesthood meetings at Lehi 7th, my Ward. After church, I came home as Debbie and Karlene were unloading the Subaru. Karlene was in a rush to get home for her granddaughter's birthday. Debbie and I drove up the canyon from Alpine to Orem and took some pictures. When we got home Debbie made soup and sandwiches for dinner. I talked to Matthew today and Beth last night. I called Michael and Rae Lynn and left messages. Debbie and I had prayer together before going to bed.
Debbie and Karlene were up early at about 6 a.m. They rode their electric bikes for almost 14 miles on the bike trail. Came back home, showered and got ready for church at 9 AM. Mary Kay Galde's memorial program was yesterday.
