Note: Earlier, I finished reading Richard Lyman Bushman's book, Joseph Smith, Rough Stone Rolling. It came to me while I was praying this morning, one thing that I thought was important, that was not included. It is in Lectures on Faith 6:7, a statement on the principle of sacrifice “Let us here observe, that a religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation”. As examples, I think of Jesus Christ, Abraham, and Joseph Smith. Neither Abraham nor Joseph Smith were perfect, without sin, only Christ was perfect, without sin. Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son, whose life he loved more than his own. Joseph Smith was willing to sacrifice all he had. He even sacrificed his own life. Jesus Christ sacrificed His life to pay for our sins, so we would not have to suffer because he loved us more than he loved His own life.
A quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, born 1906, a Lutheran Minister in Germany hung by the Nazis in 1945. True discipleship cost. Cheap grace is an excuse for a lack of commitment to obedience and sacrifice.
I was up at 6 a.m.; had prayer, called and talked to Debbie and had prayer with her before starting the day. I saw Gracie and Blake off to early morning seminary at 6:45 a.m. I studied scriptures in the book of James in the New Testament. Michael had a meeting on the phone at 8 a.m. and then we went to the gym. I climbed the stair-stepper for an hour at medium speed, exercised a little with the weights, showered, and set in the steam room for one cycle, showered, and shaved. I met Michael when he finished tennis and we came home. He went to John Moody, an old neighbor when Michael and Autumn lived at 11 Calle Portofino. John and Kelly have bought another house on the beach and Michael is helping him with some wiring. Michael took Blake to the airport to catch a flight to Hawaii about 1:30 p.m. When Michael got home we watched movies until Gracie got home, Michael went and picked up dinner. We watched a movie on TV; Debbie called and we had prayer. She went to Maxine Harmon's funeral today; she and her husband, Roger, had 15 children. Roger also has cancer but was visiting and greeting everyone and thanking them for coming. I told Michael and Gracie good night and had my personal prayer before going to bed at about 10:30 p.m.
